Apple Users Targeted Amid Bitcoin Surge: Password Theft Attacks Reach Record Levels

Apple users are facing a significant increase in cyberattacks as Bitcoin’s value surges to a record $100,000. A recent security report from cybersecurity firm ESET highlights the link between the cryptocurrency boom and a spike in password theft attacks, with macOS users being hit particularly hard.

The report, covering trends from June through November 2024, reveals a 127% increase in password-stealing malware targeting macOS, with a focus on credentials for cryptocurrency wallets. This surge outpaces the growth seen on other platforms, such as Windows, which saw a 56% rise, and Android, which experienced a 20% increase in financial malware detections.

This dramatic rise is largely attributed to the Atomic Stealer (AMOS) malware family, initially identified in 2023. AMOS has spawned numerous variants and imitators, becoming a major threat in both underground markets and real-world attacks. These malware strains target macOS users’ cryptocurrency wallets, exploiting the growing popularity and value of digital assets.

The United States has been identified as the primary target for these macOS-based attacks, followed by Italy, China, Spain, and Japan. This global trend underscores the broader impact of rising cryptocurrency values on the cybersecurity landscape. Beyond password theft, the report also notes a sharp increase in social media scams, such as AI deepfake phishing and brand impersonation attacks, as well as heightened activity from state-aligned threat groups engaging in ransomware operations.

As cybercriminals adapt their strategies to capitalize on the Bitcoin boom, individuals and organizations must take proactive steps to protect themselves. macOS users are encouraged to adopt strong cybersecurity practices, such as using unique passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and employing reputable security software.

With cryptocurrency values at historic highs, the threat to digital wallets has grown exponentially. This evolving situation serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.
